There are seven golf courses in the area and more over the bridge into Portugal. All welcome guests. If you are a golf enthusiast it may be worth exploring the course at Minas de Riotinto, the mining town, in the mountains to the northeast. We are told it was the first golf course in Spain set up by Scottish miners who came to work at Rio Tinto. Don’t expect lush green fairways, this is a dirt course. However, beautifully kept courses abound along the coast and into Portugal.
Also of interest is the Parque Nacional de Doñana, said to be the largest national park in Europe, an important wetland area and home to a multitude of wildlife. Visits to the park itself are guided only, but there are other trails through the surrounding area. There is an amazing variety of seabirds in the salt marshes all along the Costa de la Luz and into Portugal.
There are many walking and bicycle trails, and historic routes to explore in Huelva Province, which has many different types of beautiful scenery including mountains in the North running down through rolling countryside and wide plains to the dunes and long sandy beaches of the Atlantic seaboard.
Local birdwatching opportunities are plentiful and include hoopoes, a bird with striking black and white banded wings, orange plumage and bizarre crest, colourful bee-eaters with yellow, turquoise, green and brown plumage, as well as buzzards, owls, and other birds of prey. Andalucia has a dozen species of raptor, and also gets migrations from Africa. Towards the mountains, about an hour from the villa, is the best place to see them. Amongst the rarest birds of prey to be found in the area are the black vultures, of which there are only a few hundred pairs left, with their stronghold in the Sierra Morena region and around Aroche, north of Villablanca. The magnificent Spanish imperial eagle can be seen in the Parque Nacional de Doñana.
Waders abound in the marshes and estuaries along the coast and there are also flamingoes in several places.
